Alice Helen Losey's Obituary
Big Rapids - Alice Helen Losey, 95, of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at Whispering Pines Senior Living Center in Lake City, MI.
She was born August 14, 1926, in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Petkus) Zilus. On July 2, 1949, she married Dick Eugene Losey, who proceeded her in death almost a year to the date ahead of her on July 31 of last year.
Alice retired as a librarian from the Defiance County Library and volunteered at the Big Rapids Library. When the boys were young, she would conduct summer reading contests for them and their friends. Even as her eyesight began to fail, she continued to read from her daily devotion's booklets over a morning cup of coffee.
Her letters, which she wrote to family, friends, and acquaintances were crammed full of the details of life and served as the communications hub for the family. Visitors where never allowed to leave her and Dick's home until Alice had won at least one card game. She was rarely on the losing end of a game.
She will be remembered as a voracious reader, dedicated letter writer, and a zealous card player. Alice and Dick were longtime members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Big Rapids.
She is survived by their sons, Thomas (Linda) Losey of St. James, MN, James (Alexandra) Losey of Chevy Chase, MD, Robert (Judy) Losey of Lake City, MI, and Dr. John (Michele) Losey of Ithaca, NY; six grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and one great-greatgrandchild. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sons, Donald and Kenneth Losey, and her siblings, Anthony Zilus, Mary (Zilus) Stacy, and Julie (Zilus) Owens.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 20, 2022, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Richard Collin officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland View Cemetery. Alice's family will greet friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Memorial contributions in her name may be made for Hospice of Michigan - www.hom.org/donations. . Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Share a memory or express condolences at www.mohnkefuneralhome.com.
