Alwin Dean Whittum's Obituary
Lakeview - Alwin Whittum of Lakeview April 20, 2017 at Spectrum - Kelsey Extended Care Unit. Al fought a long battle with Parkinson's Disease during the past three years at Kelsey, where he received excellent care from the Nursing Staff.
Alwin was born March 9, 1934 to Edwin and Alyda Whittum in Muskegon, Michigan. He was the middle son of five boys, later a sister joined the family. Al grew up in the Muskegon area and graduated from Muskegon Heights in 1952. He had a great love for the area and Lake Michigan.
During the Korean War Al joined the Army Air Force where he proudly served in both Korea and Japan. (1952-1957) While in the Air Force he trained as a teletype technician. This training followed him throughout his life in both his work and as a hobby.
Al worked in Grand Rapids for a number of years at Mechanical Finishing and driving truck, retiring in 1996.
Alwin married Leone (Nimberger) Shaw, March 21, 1993. They lived a few years near Leone's family homestead and then moved and made friends on Wilcox Drive in Lakeview. Al had a smile and wave for everyone. He loved convertibles, cowboy hats, and boots. During his stay at Kelsey he found friends there as well. One of his favorite days was the day they gathered to play Bingo.
Al was a member of New Life United Methodist Church where he served several years in the Tech Booth. Al was a man of deep faith and served God in his everyday life.
Cremation has taken place according to Al's wishes. Memorial Services will take place at New Life United Methodist Church, Six Lakes, on Saturday, April 29th at 2:00 pm with a light lunch following at the church. Pastor Sue Babb officiating.
