Arthur "Art" Eugene Shepard's Obituary
Lakeview-Arthur "Art" Eugene Shepard, age 94, of Lakeview passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Lakeview Terrace, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lakeview on April 9, 1931, the son of Glenn and Zora (Culver) Shepard. In 1932 the family moved to Detroit where he attended school until the family moved back to Lakeview in 1945. Art graduated from Lakeview High School with the Class of 1950. In 1949 he joined the National Guard and in 1952 enlisted in the United States Air Force spending two tours of duty in Korea. Upon returning to the states, he was stationed at Tinker Air Base in Oklahoma. During that time, he met the love of his life, Louise Marie Scholes, and they were married on October 29, 1955, in Smithton, IL. Art was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1956 and he and Louise settled back in Lakeview. He was employed by General Electric and Hitachi Magnetics in Edmore from that time until his retirement in 1991. In the 1970's Art also attended night school earning the certification of Electrical Technician. He was a master craftsman, who could build anything from pedal tractors to carved wooden toys. Art enjoyed working in his yard and garden, which produced a bounty of vegetables, various fruits and numerous flowers. Together he and Louise attended square dancing club, card parties, were active members of both the Asbury and New Life United Methodist Church and traveled to Europe and around the United States. Art will be remembered as a man with a great sense of humor, who was full of "dad jokes", helped everyone, was always ready for a road trip and loved and cared for his family deeply.Art is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Louise Shepard of Lakeview; daughters, Kathy Shepard of Greenville, Laurie (Bob) Gansen of Hamilton; grandsons, David Gansen of Lakeview, Daniel (Kassandra) Gansen of Newaygo; great-granddaughter, Everly Ann; sister, Dorothy DeRaad of Lakeview; sister-in-law, Diane Hares; and many nieces, nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Zora; siblings, Aldred (Beatrice) Shepard, Margery (James) Schnick; sister-in-law, Elaine (Lurell) Main; niece, Jennifer Harms-Fiedler.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Brigham Funeral Chapel in Lakeview with Pastor Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Cato Township Cemetery. The family will greet friends for visitation on Friday, June 6, from 5:00-7:00 PM and again on Saturday, from 12:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral chapel.Donations in Art's memory can be directed to New Life United Methodist Church.
