Arthur James "Jim" Sanders' Obituary
Stanwood - Arthur James "Jim" Sanders, 90, of Stanwood, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at his son's residence, across the road from where he was born and raised.
He was born February 14, 1928, on the family farm in Mecosta Township, the son of Aura J. and Lola V. (Hicok) Sanders, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1947.
On January 6, 1950, Jim married the love of his life, Marjorie L. Wyma, and they lived within one-half mile of where he was raised. The family farm became Sanders' Sawmill, and they lumbered for many years. Jim was also a heavy equipment operator, working for Local 324 on many area building, road, and pipeline projects. When time allowed, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also loved his dogs and horses that he was privileged to have.
Jim and Marge were long-time active members of the Stanwood Free Methodist Church. They helped build the parsonage in 1957, and also were instrumental with providing the lumber and helping to build the current church building that was dedicated in 1988. During the winter months, they travelled to Texas and Florida, and continued their ministry with S.O.W.E.R. (Servants On Wheels Ever Ready), assisting on building projects. Jim loved to serve God in every way, and especially enjoyed singing in the church choir and several gospel quartets. His wish was to share what God had done for him, and prayed that all people would experience Christ's love in their lives.
Marjorie passed away on July 12, 2014. In 2015, Jim married Betty Obert, who survives. Also surviving are his son Jim and wife Linda of Stanwood; 2 grandchildren, Amy (Rob) Nielsen of Stanwood, and Aaron (Rachel) Sanders of Grand Rapids; and 7 great-grandchildren, John, Benjamin, and Kinsley Nielsen, and Andrew, Alyssabeth, Rebekah, and Matthew Sanders. Jim was also preceded in death by his daughter Shari Lyn Sanders.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2018, at the Stanwood Free Methodist Church, with Pastor Ron White officiating. Burial will follow in the Stanwood Cemetery. Jim's family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, and after 10:00 a.m. on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Church, or for Spectrum Health Hospice, with envelopes available at the funeral home. Jim's family wants to thank Spectrum Hospice for their special care and attention.
