Carl D. Pettit's Obituary
? Big Rapids Carl D. Pettit, 83, of Big Rapids passed away peacefully on September 27, 2010 at Metron of Big Rapids with his loving wife at his side. He was born on March 3, 1927 in Big Rapids to Walter and Myrtle (Potter) Pettit. Carl is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara A. (Frederick) Pettit, whom he married June 19, 1948. Also surviving, are five children; Joyce (Ben) Kinser of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Sandra (Tom) Laus, of Elida, Ohio, Janet L. (Butch) Bowman of Canadian Lakes, Susan (Seldon) Ross of Paris and John (Mary) Pettit of Newaygo, seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren; a brother Leon (Janice) Pettit, a sister Lois Lutzke, several nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Harold and Jack Pettit. Carl was a lifelong resident of Big Rapids where he graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1945. He worked as a master mechanic for his father at Pettits Sales and Service from 1943 to 1964 and repaired heavy equipment until he opened and operated Carl Pettits Sunoco Service Station in 1966 (when gas 29.9 cents per gallon). In 1968, Carl opened a second Sunoco Station on south side of Big Rapids. He sold the south side Sunoco in 1969, but continues to own and operate his north side business until he retired in 1988. Carl, a certified master mechanic, was in automotive repair for 45 years. Because of his love of the outdoors, he loved to deer hunt, fish and camp with his family. Carl was a loving husband and a devoted father. He was a gentle and quiet man with a magical twinkle in his eye that spoke volumes. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services for Carl will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids with Rev. Michael Riegler officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. ? Memorial contributions in Carls name may be made to Alzheimers Association. ?
