David Paul Nelson's Obituary
Big Rapids - David Paul Nelson, 82, of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Butterworth Hospital. He was born May 16, 1943, in Monroe, MI, the son of Harry and Molly (Karner) Nelson.
David graduated from Dundee High School in 1961 and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force following graduation. On June 27, 1970, he married Dianne Murrow, and together they made their home in Big Rapids. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University.
David was known for his strong work ethic and many talents. He snowplowed during the winter months, worked at the golf course through the spring and summer, and did amazing upholstery work. He was a member of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and was an avid hunter and fisherman who truly loved the outdoors. David especially enjoyed golfing, western movies, working with and training hunting dogs, and spending time in the Upper Peninsula.
Those who knew David will remember his wonderful sense of humor, kind heart, and appreciative nature. Though he kept a small circle of friends, they were lifelong and deeply valued friendships. He also enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen and trying new recipes.
David is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Nelson; son, Kyle Nelson; sister, Tina Doorn; aunt, Joanne Karner; cousins, Jeff (Marg) Karner, Lee (Becky) Karner, Robbie (Barbara) Karner, Sandy (George) Mayer, Carl Reiman, and Paul Reiman; and many other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughters, Tanya and Kristen.
Funeral services for David will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Trinity Fellowship EFC in Big Rapids, with Pastor Kevin Cody officiating. David’s family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m. at the church. He will be laid to rest next to his daughters at Highland View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be made to the NRA.
