David Laverne Waldron's Obituary
Big Rapids - David L. Waldron, 89, of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born December 10, 1924, in Lansing, the son of M. LaVerne and Lornah (Harris) Waldron. David joined the U. S. Navy during World War II, and made the Navy his career. He served shipboard in active combat during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and also served during the early days of the Vietnam War. He retired with the rank of Quartermaster E-8 in 1970 after nearly 30 years of service to his country. Following this retirement, David preached in Gwinn, Clare, and the Detroit area, and then moved to Green Township in 1990. He continued his ministry as the first pastor of the Church of Christ in Cedar Springs. David was very involved in the DAV and the AmVets, and officiated many military ceremonies in and around Big Rapids. He was also a member of the Sons of the Union Veterans. On November 2, 1957, he married Barbara J. Romine, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, David Sean (Debra) Waldron of Elk Grove, IL, and Kelly Grove Waldron of Marietta, CA; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Jerald (Geraldine) of Grand Rapids, and Lee (Virginia) of Roanoke, VA; his sister Patricia (Glen) Burgett of Grand Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by a sister Marilyn and a brother Charles. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 19, 2014, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Larry Curry and Ben Benzing officiating. Burial will be in the West Cemetery in Green Township, with military honors conducted by the AmVets Post #1941 and American Legion Post #98. His family will greet friends at the funeral home today (Friday) from 4-6 p.m., and after 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the DAV or the Sons of the Union Veterans, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
