Doris Platt's Obituary
Big Rapids - Doris E. Platt, 97, of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, October 6, 2017, at The Maples in Frankfort. She was born July 29, 1920, in Shabbona, IL, the daughter of William and Harriet (Lovering) Olmstead, and moved to Big Rapids at the age of 20. For many years, Doris waitressed at various restaurants throughout the area. Doris was best-known as a tireless volunteer, and champion for senior citizens. She logged over one million miles, and worked more than 50,000 hours, for such organizations as Meals-on-Wheels, RSVP, the Commission on Aging, and the Mecosta County Senior Center. Nearly 20 years ago, Doris donated property to Mecosta County Habitat for Humanity, and the first Habitat homes were built on Platt Avenue. She loved to travel, and enjoyed family reunions. Doris is survived by 3 daughters, Ellen (Donald) Cook of Big Rapids, Marilyn Laramore of Hersey, and Donna (Jeffery) Frederickson of Frankfort, a daughter-in-law Judith Welch of Texas; 20 grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Hiram in 1971, sons Larry and Ralph, daughter Rosemary Francis, son-in-law Louis Laramore, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and 3 grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 13, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Bill Routley officiating. Burial will be in the West Cemetery in Green Township. Doris' family will greet friends at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Memorial contributions in her name may be made for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
