Douglas O'Neil's Obituary
Our Dad, Douglas Edward O’Neil, passed away on March 2, 2022 at the age of 95. He grew up in Muskegon Michigan and married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Laskowski, whom he met during his high school years in Muskegon. They were married on November 22. 1949 and remained married for 70 loving years.
Early on Douglas O’Neil was a diligent worker, becoming an Eagle Scout and serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he went to Michigan State University. Following this he became the youngest person to that point to graduate from the F.B.I. Academy. As an FBI Special Agent, Mr. O’neil was stationed in Missouri, New York, Kentucky and finally Detroit, Michigan. He spent several years living in Farmington Hills until his retirement after a long and distinguished career.
He and Shirley ultimately moved to their beloved Canadian Lakes where they enjoyed a very energetic lifestyle. Doug was involved in all kinds of activities including bridge, boating, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and others. He and Shirley were especially good at tennis and won many trophies, both as a team and individually.. They loved gardening and over the years planted thousands of trees on their various properties. Traveling all over the world was a passion of theirs as well.
In addition, Doug and Shirley spearheaded an inventive neighborhood group called the “Mystery Club” which involved planning a secret endeavor that remained unknown to the other members until the day of the event. This group held scavenger hunts, canoe trips, visits to art shows,, music and sporting events, dining adventures, and much more. The Mystery Club carried on for 50 fun years.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Diane O’Neil Hill (Thomas); Douglas Edward “Chip” O’Neil Jr. (Carla Rosenblum); Deborah Ann O’Neil Walker (Michael); Sister-in-Law: Arlene Laskowski.
Grandchildren: Jessica Hill Lovely (Evan); Lauren Hill Hubbard (Drew); Kelsey O’Neil (Michael Forester); Kerby O’Neil; Kale O’Neil (Allison Erickson); and Great Grandchildren: Malone Meyers; Bridger Lovely; Arlo O’Neil; and Abram Barabe.
Doug was preceded in death by his brother-in-law: Robert Laskowski
A graveside ceremony will take place on April 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Remus, Michigan.
There will also be a “Celebration of Life” memorial on July 16, 2022, at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
