Edith May Kelley's Obituary
Big Rapids Edith May Kelley, 83, of Montague, formerly of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, April 11, 2008, at Heartland Health Care Center in Whitehall. She was born May 29, 1924, in Remus, the daughter of Cleo and Lola (Burdick) Steinman. During World War II, Edith worked at the Ford Willow Run Bomber Plant in Detroit. She then moved to California, where for several years she worked at a home for special-needs children. Returning to Big Rapids in the mid 1950s, Edith worked for over 10 years at Floyds Tavern on Maple Street. In 1965, she married Lawrence E. Kelley of Big Rapids, and the couple moved to the Montague area, where they have lived since. Edith was a cancer survivor for 53 years, and her family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Heartland Health Care Center for their kindness and devotion during Ediths illness. Surviving are her husband; 1 sister, Juanita Verburg of Greenville; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Edith was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Paul, Gerald, and Donald Steinman, and John Shannessey. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Rev. John Bookshaw officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Plains Cemetery. Memorial contributions for the American Cancer Society may be left at the funeral home, where Ediths family will greet friends on Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services.
