Elizabeth Jean Simpson's Obituary
Big Rapids-Elizabeth (Betty) Jean Simpson. 87, of Big Rapids, formerly of the Detroit area, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2014 at Spectrum Health Big Rapids. She was born on July 18, 1926 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of George and Florence (Picking) Haas. Betty worked for Chrysler Motor Company for 40 years. She loved boating, fishing and sports, especially football. She was the eternal party girl and loved spending time with family and friends. She dearly loved and was very proud of her family and had a great zest for life. Upon moving to Mecosta County she made many new and dear friends. Betty was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church where she loved being the "Card Lady" to parish members. Betty was a member of SOAR at the Mecosta County Senior Center. She loved to travel and the occasional trip to the casino. "Nanny" to her grandchildren and great grandchildren will be fondly remembered and dearly missed. Betty is survived by two daughters, Laura Thebo and Kathleen (Ralph) Pierce, six grandchildren; Charlotte Zajkowski, Wendy (David) Pearce, Rob (Cindy) Zajkowski, Kristina (Rich) Coby, Steven (Amber) Petty and Katie (Michael) Richey, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two brothers; David (Margaret) Haas and Christopher Haas. Betty was preceded in death by her parents plus three brothers; Jim Grant, George Haas II, William Haas and one sister, Kathryn Haas. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Howard City with Father James Wyse celebrant. Visitation will be Sunday at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids from 4-6:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until service time on Monday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mecosta County Senior Center.
