Eugene S. Polhamus' Obituary
Big Rapids - Eugene S. "Gene" Polhamus, age 86, of Big Rapids, went home to be with our Father on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at Altercare of Big Rapids. He was born June 11, 1927, in Lansing, the son of James and Marion "Mary" (Salter) Polhamus. During World War II, Gene served with the U.S. Army in Germany as part of the Government Branch; upon returning to the U.S. he completed his service as an M.P. in Times Square, New York. Gene retired as plant manager from Owens-Illinois Glass Factory in Charlotte in 1989, and moved to the area shortly thereafter. He was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW; a charter member of the Stanwood Eagles Aerie #4360, and an active of the Big Rapids Eagles Aerie #2535. Gene is survived by his wife of 20 years, Virginia (Allers); his children Eugene S. Polhamus, Jr. (Kristeen) of Utah, Delores Rohrbacher, Rudy Polhamus, and Jerry Polhamus, all of Colorado, Bonnie Drabik (John) of Dorr, Patricia Gibson of Mason, James A. Polhamus of Wyoming, MI, and Marcy Currier (Emil LaRue) of Allendale; step-children Joann Wells-Newman (Rob) of Mason, Pat Fuller (Fred), Mike Cline, Colin Cline (Roberta), all of Big Rapids, Mark Cline (Tammy) of Reed City; his sisters Betty, Mary, and Esther; his brothers Johnny, James, Jay, and Tom; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his father James, mother Mary Polhpamus-Homan, step-father J. Dale Homan, Sr., brother Robert E., and sisters Arlene Frith and Theresa "Terri" Homan Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 4, 2013, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pastor Rebecca Morrison officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Big Rapids American Legion Post #98 and the AmVets Post #1941. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery in Charlotte. Memorial contributions in his name for Great Lakes Hospice may be left at the funeral home, where Gene's family will greet friends beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Friday through time of services.
