Evelyn Ruth Hay's Obituary
Big Rapids - Evelyn Ruth Hay, 85, of Big Rapids and formerly of Morley, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. She was born January 14, 1929, in Aetna Township, the daughter of Evert and and Minnie (Otteson) Lewis, and graduated from Morley High School in 1947. In 1959, Evelyn married John S. Hay, who preceded her in death in 1964. After raising their 3 daughters, who attended Morley-Stanwood High School, she moved to Big Rapids. Evelyn was an active member of the Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, donating her time and talents to many projects there. Known as the "Crochet Lady", Evelyn had a great love and talent for crocheting baby blankets, rag rugs, dishcloths, and the like, and made many items on request. She donated many of her crafts to WISE and other charitable organizations. Evelyn is survived by three daughters, Kathleen (Jon "Duffy") Whitfield of Cedar Springs, Joanna (Jim) Buczynski of Bitely, and Darlene (Tony) Yeager of Big Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Heather (David) Frost, Cassi (Derek) Crouch, Tyler Yeager, Jennifer (Ken) Good, Jacklyn (Fiancee A.J. Hollenbeck) Gerst, Jessica Gerst; 6 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Adriana, Davin, Madelyn, Dylan, and soon-to-be-born Lucas; and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn was also preceded in death by an infant son, a great-grandson Mason Lee Crouch, 2 sisters, and 5 brothers. Funeral services for Evelyn will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at the Third Avenue United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, with Pastor Ed Milam officiating. Burial will be in the Aetna Cemetery in Morley. Her family will greet friends on Monday, April 21, from 4-8 p.m. at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, and at the church after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to her church or the Newaygo Medical Care Facility for their activity fund, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
