Frieda E. Selfridge's Obituary
Big Rapids Township Frieda E. Selfridge, 87, of Stanwood, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at Altercare of Big Rapids. She was born January 20, 1921, in Germany, the daughter of Gustav and Wanda (Winter) Klem, and moved to the United States at the age of 7. Frieda lived in Perry, Michigan for many years, graduating from Perry High School in 1939. On May 26, 1940, she married Donald R. Selfridge, who preceded her in death in 1985. In 1963, the couple moved to the Stanwood area where Frieda has resided since. Frieda worked several years as a Nurses Aid at the Stanwood Hospital. In 1966, she began employment at F.W. Woolworths in Big Rapids, retiring when the store closed in the mid 1970s. Frieda was an avid bowler who also enjoyed fishing off of her houseboat and bird watching. She regularly attended the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood, and was a member of the Sweet Adeline Group, Mecosta County Re-Act, and the Hummingbird Association. Surviving are her 5 children, Wanda Jean (John) Avey of Paris, Mary Jane Vogt of Big Rapids, Florence Selfridge of Stanwood, Donald (Lynn) Selfridge, Jr. of Big Rapids, and Linda Sue (Michael) Wilcox of Newaygo; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Klem of Perry; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, George Corey of Morley. Along with her husband, Frieda was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Wright-Sturm in 2008, and a brother, Herbert in 2006. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., tomorrow (Saturday), November 8, 2008, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Rev. Dominick Tommy officiating. Burial will follow in the Stanwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions the Northland United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home, where Friedas family will greet friends today (Friday) from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and prior to services on Saturday.
