Gary Lee Chambon's Obituary
Gary L. Chambon, 74 of Canadian Lakes, MI, passed away December 15, 2015 at his home with family by his side. Cremation will take place with a memorial service to follow in the spring.
Gary was born December 18, 1940, in Flint, MI. He retired from GM truck and Bus in May of 1998 after 30 years of dedicated service. He was fortunate to have been able to stay in touch with so many of his GM friends after retirement. Gary always said, “If you can go through life and have a couple of really good friends, you had something.” Gary was fortunate to exceed that number.
He spent his retirement years at Canadian Lakes playing (learning how to play) the not so stressful game on golf. His later life passions included getting back into riding motorcycles. He was ecstatic when his wife, Bernice, learned to ride and they would venture out on their Harley’s. They rode together in Michigan, Florida, Black Hills, Blue Ridge Parkway and in Arizona on their winter getaways. His pride and joy though was his Big Dog Chopper that he won so many trophies with.
October, 2012, Gary was diagnosed with lung cancer. At that time he was given nine months to live. There are many Doctors to thank for making the journey longer than expected but there is a special thanks to Dr. William DuBois, his PCP, for early detection. And a very special thanks to his Medical Oncologist, Dr. Lawrence Pawl, for his care and treatment.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife and closest friend, Bernice; children whose accomplishments have made him so proud, Michael (Nancy), Brian (Lisa), Gary Jr., Pamela (Doug) Brown, Penny Robbins; grandchildren, Angela, Christopher, Jacob, Jamie, Jeremy, Kylee, Mark, Samantha and Sean; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jayden, Sydnie and Zachary; his Chicago family, Ken and Carol Poindexter, Heather (Mike) Kelly and their children, Jordan, Ryan, Connor and Jack, Cheryl (Matt) Carr and their children, Patrick, Maisie and Charlie, and Nicole Poindexter.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Harold “Tuffy” Chambon who passed away in 1978; his so special mother, Della “Marie” Chambon in 1989 and his son-in-law, Michael Robbins in 2009.
Those desiring may direct memorial contributions to one of Gary’s favorite charities: Disabled American Veterans, The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center.
