Gene Russell Bass Sr.'s Obituary
Gene Russell Bass Sr. of Blanchard, Michigan, passed away at his home on April 17, 2026. He was born on September 11, 1951, in Flint, Michigan, to Robert Eugene Bass and Mona Jean Krouse.
Gene was truly a jack of all trades, but his greatest passion in life was automobiles. He loved building race cars, hot rods, and anything with a motor. If it ran fast, made noise, or needed fixing, Gene was in his element. He was known as a bit of a loner, yet he deeply enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and auctions. Gene was a legendary storyteller—always sharing tales of projects he had worked on, and if you heard the story twice, it may have grown a little each time.
As a father, Gene instilled a strong work ethic in his sons and expected them to stay on the straight path with little room for excuses. He showed his love in his own way—through lessons, guidance, and the example he set. In later years, he especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s ballgames, cookouts, and family gatherings.
Gene is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Bass, whom he married on July 17, 1986; his children, Gene (Carrie) Bass Jr., Jason Bass, Jody (Danielle) Bass, and Michael (Amber) Carey; his brothers, Tim Bass, Dave Bass, and Rob (Angelina) Bass; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and his beloved cats, Buck Shot and Bird Shot.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, June Scheidt.
Gene’s family will carry countless stories and memories of him for many years to come.
Funeral services will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at The Potter’s House Family Worship Center, 5346 East Deerfield Road, Mount Pleasant, Michigan 48858. Family and friends are invited to gather one hour prior to the service for visitation. His son, Pastor Jody Bass, will officiate. A luncheon to follow service at The Potter's House.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Checks may be made to Gene Bass Jr.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Janowicz Family Funeral Home of Remus, Michigan.
