Gene Alan Speet's Obituary
Canadian Lakes - Gene Alan Speet, 83, of Canadian Lakes, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born July 7, 1939, in Holland, MI, the son of Gerald and Wilma (VerHey) Speet. He graduated from Caledonia High School in 1957, and married the love of his life, Charlene Gould, the following year on December 13, 1958. A brick Mason all of his working career, Gene built many local buildings during the summer months, as well as numerous buildings out of state during the winter months. He was an avid outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing with his grandchildren as often as possible. Gene loved watching all sports, especially football. He enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events to cheer them on. Some might say he was the world's greatest storyteller, others would consider him to be a giving Christian man, and many saw him as a "straight shooter". Although his family knew him to be all of those things. Charismatic, strong willed, and an animal lover were all words used to describe Gene.
His kind yet straightforward nature will be so deeply missed by his wife of almost 64 years, Charlene Speet; daughters, Dawn Lisson, Cheryl Speet, and Kim Speet; four grandchildren, Brian Casey, Jason Turman, Nicholas Halm and Charlotte Guererro; one great-grandson, Tommy Turman; brother, Richard Welch, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Gene's life will be held in the spring 2023. Memorial contributions in his name may be made for Harmony Cares Hospice. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Share a memory or express condolences at mohnkefuneralhome.com.
