She was born in Gideon, Missouri, on December 11, 1934, to Granvel and Eteau (Berry) Taylor. Genia was raised near Poplar Bluff, MO and graduated from Fisk High School. After graduation she moved to Flint, MI where she was employed by AC Spark Plug, a division of General Motors. During that time, she met William McClinchey, and they were married at the United Methodist Church in Flint on August 10, 1957. They also went roller skating often and were able to travel to Bob-Lo Island amusement park via the ferry from Detroit. Genia started classes at C S Mott Community College in Flint and earned an associate in arts degree. At that time businesses were moving from downtown Flint to the malls, so she helped to bring new ones back into downtown. She volunteered at Center City Association (who partnered with the Flint DDA) and helped with the opening of AutoWorld, and the Water Street Pavilion, that is now part of U of M. Genia was offered a membership in Flint's Business & Professional Women's Club, which she readily accepted, and soon became vice-president. At this point William and Genia retired and moved to Lakeview. They built their home at Townline Lake where they had vacationed with their kids for many years.
