Gerald Jim Grunst's Obituary
Big Rapids Gerald J. Jim Grunst, 88, of Big Rapids, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009, at Altercare of Big Rapids. He was born August 23, 1921, in Petoskey, the son of Frank and Lydia (Hueckman) Grunst. As a child Jim moved to Big Rapids with his family, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1940. During World War II, Jim served as a flight instructor with the U.S. Army Air Corp. While in Texas recovering from a plane crash in which the other three people perished, he met Army nurse Jeanie Straw. Following his honorable discharge, the couple was wed on April 12, 1945. Shortly thereafter, the couple returned to Big Rapids, and Jim joined his brothers Frank and John at Grunst Brothers Sport Center. He remained active in the business until recent health issues forced his retirement. Jim was a long-time active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, serving on various boards and committees. He also served on the Big Rapids Community Hospital Board of Directors for many years as a trustee and former president. His wife Jeanie preceded Jim in death in 1996. Surviving are a son David (Sally) of Traverse City; a daughter Elaine (Steve) Durst of Portage; grandsons Thomas Durst and Christopher Grunst; 2 sisters-in-law, Hertha and Jeannette Grunst of Big Rapids; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was also preceded in death by his brothers Frank and John, and sister Dorothy. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 2, 2010, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, with Rev. John Bookshaw officiating. Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery. Jims family will greet friends after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions in his name may be made for St. Peters Lutheran Church. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
