Gerald James Harrington's Obituary
Big Rapids - Gerald J. Harrington, 91, of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at the Brook Retirement Home in Big Rapids.
He was born May 4, 1927, in Marshall, MI, the son of Donald and Madeline (Vandenheede) Harrington. During the later stages of WWI, Jerry served with the U.S. Army, stationed in Greenland.
Following his discharge, Jerry returned to Marshall, and on December 10, 1949, he married Barbara Jean Duckham. Together they raised four boys, built three houses, and taught their children the value of doing your best in all things, working hard, and being respectful and compassionate to all.
For 35 years, Jerry and worked for Eaton Manufacturing in Marshall until retiring. In the 1980's Jerry and Barb moved to Chippewa Lake, and later Reed City, bringing them closer to family. Jerry was actively involved with his grandchildren, whether it was attending sporting events, snowmobiling, or watching their horse-riding skills.
Jerry was an avid golfer, and enjoyed bowling during the winter months. He was a member of the VFW in Marshall, and he and Barb travelled several times to Australia to visit family.
Barb preceded Jerry in death on August 3, 2017. He is survived by their four sons, Dave (Ann), Greg (Kitty), Chris (Mary), and Ben (Jennifer); 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Paul and Phil Harrington; sister Sue Fhaner; and many nieces and nephews. Jerry was also preceded in death by his brother Don Harrington, and sisters, Caroline Gorseline and Mary Houchen.
There will be a Celebration of Jerry's Life get together on Sunday, January 13, 2019 in Battle Creek.
