Gerald J. Underwood's Obituary
Stanwood - Gerald James Underwood, 82, of Stanwood, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Grand Rapids after a prolonged illness. The devout Christian, avid hunter, and rifleman was born on March 25, 1933, the son of Percy and Athleen (Locklin) Underwood. A Detroit native, Army veteran, and Oakland County business owner, Mr. Underwood was a graduate of Howe Military Academy in Howe, Indiana and the University of Michigan. He was a long time resident of Canadian Lakes after retiring from operating his family's sand and gravel business in Oakland County. Retirement years kept Jerry very busy while he pursued his many interests including blacksmithing, woodworking (notably crafting Shaker chairs) and traveling around the world. As a member of the Northland United Methodist Church, Jerry's greatest passion during this time was serving God. He especially cherished his role as a Gideon in Central/Northern Michigan, passing out thousands of Bibles to people in Michigan and aboard. "Jerry" is survived by his sons, Robert, Scott (Karen), and William (Lynne) Underwood; four grandchildren, Ashley, Chelsea, Alexandria, and Lydea; and two great grandchildren, Aiden and Koen; and sister, Judith (Walter) Dietrich. He was preceded in death by parents; first wife, Donna (Landon); and second wife, Beverley (Doan). Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Friday, June 26, 2015 at the Northland United Methodist Church, Stanwood, with Pastor Gary Bondarenko officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the Dementia Society of America (www.dementiasociety.org).
