Big Rapids - Harold Kearney Walters, 86, of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at The Brook Retirement Community.
He was born September 3, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Harold and Treva (Adams) Walters. In 1936 the family moved to Michigan. Kearney attended Dearborn Schools, where he lettered in basketball and tennis, graduating in 1949. He attended Ferris State College where he continued to play basketball, was president of the Sigma Alpha Delta fraternity, president of his senior class, and he helped originate what is now known as the Bulldog Club, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelors degree in accounting. After graduating from Ferris, Kearney spent the next 2 years in the U.S. Army, the last year and a half on Okinawa.
After retiring, Kearney moved back to the Big Rapids area, and became very involved in Ferris Athletics. He was president of the Bulldog Club for 2 years, and served on the board of the Ferris Athletic Association. For all the efforts he had for Ferris, he was awarded Ferris's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989, which he was most proud of.
Kearney loved to spend time hunting and fishing. He also loved his Tigers, Lions, Wings and Pistons.
Ferris was also the greatest thing to have happen to his life, as he met his wife Jacqueline Lightfoot, who survives, also their two super children, Mark (Diane) Walters and Sharon (Ken) Ritz; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
There are no services planned at this time. Memorial contributions in Kearney's name may be made to Spectrum Health Hospice, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
