Henry J. Spence's Obituary
Henry J. Spence, age 89, of Stanwood went to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 27, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born August 21, 1923 in Wyandotte, Michigan, the son of Dustin and Emma (Ball) Spence. Henry had been employed as a sales manager for Vesco Oil Co. in the Detroit area for 38 years prior to retiring and moving to Stanwood. For the past 20 years he had been the "Wal-Mart Man", a greeter who so many remember for his singing, whistling and pleasant smile. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Big Rapids, were he held the lay priesthood office of Priest. Henry is survived by Lillian, his wife of 70 years; one son; Henry, Jr. (Donna) Spence of Stanwood; six grandchildren, Dusty (Trish) Spence, Tammy (Larry) Brown, Tina Meade, David Ptak, Johnnie Ptak and Dawn Ptak; 12 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and ten brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2012 at the Mohnke Funeral Home with Elder Charles Cushway officiating. Henry's family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
