Hertha Doris Grunst's Obituary
Big Rapids - Hertha Doris Grunst, 99, of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Metron of Big Rapids, where she had resided since 2004.
She was born December 7, 1918, in Big Rapids, the ninth child of Henry and Ammelia (Kietzman) Golz. Hertha attended St. Peter's Lutheran School and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1936. She was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
For several years, Hertha worked as an operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Company. She then worked as a receptionist for Justice Marvin West, and for many years was a customer service representative for First National Bank & Trust until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, and quilting with her sisters.
On June 1, 1941, Hertha married Frank Grunst Jr., who preceded her in death in 1955. She is survived by two sons, Ken (Janet) of Williamsburg, VA and Jim (Diane) of Big Rapids; three grandchildren, Christy (Col. Chris) Black, Angela (Joe) Mondrella, and Nathan (Erica) Grunst; five great-grandchildren, Connor and Annabelle Black, and Henley, Daxton and Layke Grunst; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was also preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, Frank and Lydia Grunst, Sr.; sisters, Lenora (Ira) Bongard, Ruth (Herb) Keitzman, Dorothea (Bob) Snyder, Alma (Jack) Webber, Olga (Max) Reynolds, Billie (Chris) Becker, Marge (Cliff) Losey; brother Don (Violet) Goltz; daughter-in-law Ardith Dee Grunst; brothers and sisters-in -law Gerald (Jeanie) Grunst and John (Jeanette) Grunst; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, with Rev. John Bookshaw officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland View Cemetery. Hertha's family will greet friends Monday, May 21, 2018, from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, and at the church after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Memorial contributions in Hertha's name may be made to the St. Peter's Lutheran School Scholarship Fund.
