Hilda Ruby Spedowski's Obituary
Big Rapids - Hilda Ruby Spedowski, 86, of Big Rapids, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2022, at her home with her family by her side.
She was born August 29, 1935, in Stanwood, the daughter of Melbourne and Dora (Leiter) Boerma, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1953. In October of that same year, Hilda married Richard L. McGorman, and lived in the area her entire life.
For nearly 30 years, Hilda worked at the Giant Supermarket in Big Rapids, retiring as Head Cashier when the store closed. She then worked part-time for Mrs. C's Uniform Service. At the age of 60, Hilda was proud to earn her Cosmetology Degree. She also babysat at home, and loved becoming a full-time Grandma.
On July 20, 1968, her husband Richard passed away. In 2001, Hilda married Ernest J. Spedowski, and they enjoyed dancing, tractor pulls, and attending flea markets and auctions together.
Hilda is survived by her husband Ernie; her children, Dora Smith, Barbara Galer, Michael McGorman, Patsy (Larry) Bourke, and Steven Maguire; stepchildren, Sharon (Gilbert) Rish, Marshelle (Paul) Renne, and Floyd Spedowski; daughter-in-law Karen VanSyckle; brother Harold (Joyce) Boerma; and many grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Glen McGorman, son-in-law Robert Galer, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, May 5, 2022, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pastor Dave Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Ladner Cemetery in Roger Heights. Hilda's family will greet friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 4, from 5-8 p.m., and prior to services on Thursday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Hilda's name may be made to Mecosta County Senior Center or Mecosta County Animal Rescue Coalition.
