Jack Donald Park's Obituary
Big Rapids - Jack D. Park, 89, of Big Rapids, former owner of Park's Sawmill, passed away Friday, October 27, 2017, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born December 2, 1927, in Lakeview, the son of Raymond and Florence (Switzer) Park, and lived in the area most of his life. During World War II, Jack served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre Following his discharge, Jack returned to Big Rapids, and in 1948 he married Patricia Hornby. As a Naval reservist, Jack was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict, and learned his sawmill trade as part of a Seabees construction and sawmilling crew. Jack worked as a sawyer for a Michigan firm after his service, and then brought his family back to the farm in Colfax Township where Pat was born. In 1967, Jack and Pat began their sawmill operation with the aid of their young sons, and Jack worked until he retired at the age of 83. Jack loved his family, especially enjoying time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A man of great faith, he read his Bible every day, and sought strength in his Lord. Jack is survived by his wife Pat; 4 sons, Carl (Linda) of Chambersburg, PA, Calvin (Barbara) of Big Rapids, Randy (Mary) of Paris, and Clay (Roseann Lauretti) of Belding; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; his sister Lola Parish of Big Rapids; and many nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his daughter Sharon Lynn, brothers Frank, Russell, and Robert, and sisters Ruth LaBree and Pearl Lutjens. Private family visitation will take place at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with interment services at the Pine Plains Cemetery in Colfax Township. A celebration of Jack's life will be at CK's Place at 11515 Northland Drive, Big Rapids, on Saturday, November 4. His family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m., with a memorial service to be officiated by Pastor Ted Johnson to begin at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon and reception will follow immediately. Memorial contributions in Jack's name may be made for Spectrum Health Hospice, or the Mecosta County Commission on Aging, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
