James B. Shane's Obituary
On Thursday, June 24, 2021, James Barry Shane, loving husband of Karen Lewis Shane, went home to the Lord. He fought valiantly against the ravages of multiple afflictions though finally chose to start his next journey surrounded by family. Also missing him greatly are his sons Kevin Shane and David Shane; his daughters Kelly Pabich, Jennifer Shane and Elizabeth Bonkoski; and his many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Jim was born in August 1932 in Pontiac, Michigan to William E. & Kathryn H. Shane, the second of three sons. Brothers Bill and Mike preceded him in taking the next step and are now reunited.
Jim had many accomplishments during his life including degrees in Architecture from the University of Notre Dame and Education from the University of Michigan. He was a professor and department head for the College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State University for most of his career. He also designed commercial and residential structures as a practicing architect, one of his more notable being the Carillon Tower on the campus of FSU. The James B. Shane Architectural Technology Scholarship is awarded to those students who demonstrate enthusiasm and participation is the Architectural Technology program.
Jim served as President of the Grand Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and as President of the Michigan Society of Architects. He was awarded the AIA Michigan Gold Medal in 1994 in recognition of contributions and for demonstrating outstanding achievement in professional endeavor. Both professionally and personally, Jim demonstrated great dedication and compassion for the people he encountered throughout his life, He will be greatly missed
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at St. Paul Campus Parish, with Father Michael Burt officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Jim's family will greet friends at the church on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be made to Faith Hospice Trillium Woods 8214 Pfeiffer Farms Dr. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315.
