Jane M. Martz's Obituary
Big Rapids - Jane M. Martz, 56, of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014, at Altercare of Big Rapids. She was born January 3, 1958, in Big Rapids, the daughter of Robert and Murlin (Serrell) Martz. Jane attended Big Rapids Public Schools, the MOISD Education Center, and MOARC (Hope Network of Paris, MI) from 1983 until 2010. She enjoyed working in the community at the Rock at FSU, and with cleaning crews at the Nesbitt and Fairman apartment buildings, along with other sites. Jane was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Big Rapids. She was an active participant in Area 5 Special Olympics, competing in poly hockey, bowling, bocce, horseshoes, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing, and was very proud of the many medals she won. Jane also enjoyed listening to music, watching TV, and she loved to dance, especially line dancing. She spent the last 2-1/2 years under the loving care of the staff at Altercare. Jane is survived by her parents; her brother Steven (Diane) of Farmington Hills; nephew Nicholas and niece Marissa, her aunt Grace Dunkel, her uncles Allen Hales, Harold Martz, Van (Janet) Serrell; and many cousins. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, with Pastor John Bookshaw officiating. Spring burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery. Jane's family will greet friends after 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the church, with a luncheon to follow services. Memorial contributions may be made for the St. Peter's Church Organ Fund or Area 5 Special Olympics, with envelopes available at the Mohnke Funeral Home.
