Jean Horn's Obituary
Jean Horn of Big Rapids, died Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids following a long and courageous battle against cancer. She was 73. Jean was born March 20, 1939 in Clinton, Okla., the third of four daughters to Orin and Doris Adkins. As a young child, her family moved to Woodward, Okla., where she attended school, graduating from Woodward High School in 1957. On Aug. 29, 1958, she married Gary C. Horn. The couple would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year. A devoted wife and mother, Jean worked in the medical field for several years. After moving to Big Rapids, Mich., in 1986, she volunteered her time to the Mecosta County General Hospital's Ladies Auxiliary, serving as president. She was also secretary of and helped establish the Big Rapids Kiwanis Club. Jean was Kiwanian of the Year in 1994-1995. She was also a talented and accomplished artist who loved to sew and cook. She had a particular fondness of and talent for basket weaving. Known to family and friends as Jeannie' she was a second mom to dozens of college students over the years. She always offered kind words, comfort and encouragement to everyone she met. She loved to travel and entertain. Jean loved to celebrate holidays and birthdays with her family. Most of all she enjoyed her seven grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Gary, of the home; son Rick, and his wife, Lee, of Wellington, Kan.; Rene Kaufman, and her husband, Tony, of Andover, Kan.; Dr. Mary Jo Horn and her husband, Mark Sisson, of Fayetteville, Ark.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Kaufman, Jessica Kaufman, Andrew Horn, Sydney Kaufman, William (Woody) Horn, Samuel Horn, and Alaina Jean Horn-Sisson; and a sister, Ann Hill, and her husband, Roscoe, of Woodward, Okla. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Jody Rominger and June McEntire. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at the Chapel of the Salvation Army Corps. located at 325 Linden Street in Big Rapids. A viewing is available one hour before services. A memorial service and burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Woodward, Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. June 30, 2012. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Gary and Jean Horn Scholarship Fund at Ferris State University.
