John David Henry III, 68, of Byron Center, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2026, at The Oaks at Byron Center.
He was born July 5, 1957, in Detroit, MI, the son of John David Jr. (Dave) and Mary (Dunham) Henry. John attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1975 with highest honors. He enjoyed the opportunity to travel with his High School team to Spain. He later attended Michigan Tech University.
In his younger years, John was very active in the Boy Scouts and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that reflected his dedication, perseverance, and strong character.
He was a long-time member of St. Mary’s/St. Paul’s in Big Rapids. With a very strong faith, he had a deep love for reading and studying the Bible. He was a lifelong learner who kept up with current events by reading the newspapers and watching TV. He possessed an exceptional mind with the uncanny ability to retain facts. A true trivia buff, he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He was loving, kind, enduring, and always curious about the world around him. He especially enjoyed writing letters and staying connected with family and friends.
In earlier years, John found great joy in volunteering and participating at the Cherry Street Clubhouse in Grand Rapids. Later he enjoyed the many activities and friendships he experienced at The Oaks at Byron Center. Spending time with his family meant the world to him, as did his cherished moments at School Section Lake.
He is survived by his brothers, Bill (Tina) Henry and Mike Henry; sister, Mary Anne (Tony) Jones; his loving children, Jeremy, Jennifer, Khristina, and Kyle; his grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Nancy and Cathy.
