Lela Clarice Walker's Obituary
Stanwood - Lela C. Walker, 91, of Canadian Lakes, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018, at Margaret's Meadows near Remus.
She was born May 9, 1927, in Deering, MO, the daughter of Earl and Lucille (Kinnamon) Anderson, and moved to Flint as a child. Lela was the first female Safety Patrol Officer in Flint, and graduated from Flint Central High School in 1945. She then earned her degree as a Registered Nurse from Grant Hospital in Chicago, and served as a Cadet Corp Nurse in the U.S. Army during the end of World War II.
Following her discharge, Lela returned to Flint, and on September 18, 1948, she married William "Bill" Walker. For 40 years, Lela worked at McLaren Hospital in Flint, mainly in the Maternity Department, and helped to deliver hundreds of babies, including many of her own grandchildren.
In 1988, Lela and Bill moved to Canadian Lakes, and became active members of the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood. Lela was an avid reader, and was an excellent seamstress and knitter as well.
Lela's family would like to extend their special thanks to Margaret's Meadows for their loving care and compassion.
Surviving are her husband Bill; one daughter, Janice (Michael) Walker-Kreutziger of East Lansing; 2 sons, Keith (Heidi) of Filion, and Brian of Eaton Rapids, 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother Johnny (Betty) Anderson of Arkansas, 1 niece and 1 nephew. Lela was preceded in death by infant twin daughters.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2018, at the Northland United Methodist Church, with Rev. Gary Bondarenko officiating. Committal services with burial will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 15, at the Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint. Lela's family will greet friends at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday until time of services. Memorial contributions in Lela's name may be made for her church, or to Heartland Hospice
