Leroy "Johnny" F. Reid's Obituary
Barton Township - Leroy F. "Johnny" Reid, 80, of Barton Township, passed away Tuesday, April 13, 2021, at his residence.
He was born June 18, 1940 on the Reid Centennial Farm in Barton Township, the son of John and Esther (Jernstadt) Reid, and graduated from Reed City High School in 1960. Johnny then served with the Army National Guard for 6 years. On June 16, 1962, he married Paulette M. Jobes.
A lifelong farmer, Johnny also worked for Central (later Western) Concrete Products for over 35 years. He was a member of the Reed City AmVets Post #2965, and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #705. He was also a member of the Paris Trailblazers Snowmobile Club, and enjoyed buggy riding on his side-by-side.
For many years and countless hours, Johnny and Paulette organized the Hawkins Community Horse Pull. He was Grandpa and Uncle for many local kids, and enjoyed giving hayrides with "Ma" driving the team. On a daily basis, he would open the Last Chance Saloon in Hawkins for the Coffee Club, and maybe some Keno. Johnny was also an avid deer hunter, and loved to host hunting and venison parties. More recently, Johnny and Paulette enjoyed winters in Florida with many new friends.
Johnny is survived by his wife Paulette, and several nieces and nephews, and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and a brother.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 17, 2021, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pastor Connie Schumacher officiating. Burial will follow in the Davenport Cemetery in Barton Township. Johnny's family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made for Spectrum Health Hospice, 100 Michigan St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
