Lyman Stanton Walker's Obituary
Lyman Stanton Walker went to be with his Lord on March 10, 2022. He was born in Pontiac, MI on September 2, 1934 to Lyman Walker and Ruth Pennell Smith Walker. Prior to graduating from Chelsea High School in 1952, Stanton enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1951 and went on active duty in 1953, serving until 1956 during the Korean War. He received a B.A. degree from Michigan State University in 1960 and an M.B.A. from Central Michigan University in 1969. He began his academic career at Central Michigan where he served as Director of the University Center Food Service throughout the 60’s. Later, he and his family moved to Marquette, Michigan in 1969 where Stanton served as Assistant Vice President of Business and Finance at Northern Michigan University.
In 1957 he married Shirley L. Pierce in Chelsea, MI. They had two children, Marcia Lyn Walker Defnet (Donald) and Cheryl Jane Walker Schreiner (Harold). Of great joy to Stanton during his life were his grandchildren, Garret D. and Adam J. Williams, Stuart M. and Amanda R. Spink, Dylan Walker, and Summer Evans Schreiner; and one great grandchild, Tyler K. Williams. Also surviving him is one niece, Dr. Lindabeth Binkley; several cousins, Catherine Smith DeRousha (Joe), Rebecca Smith Perreault (Ted), David Smith (Melody), Lewis Fitzgerald (Wilma), Trisha Fitzgerald, James Smith, Denise Smith, Jeanette Smith McKee, Dr. Peter Smith (Louise), Barbara Smith Parks Janice Miller Wieckowski (Joel), Buster Miller, and Carolyn Smith Piper. A sister, Linda Ann Binkley; cousin, Joe Parks, Lewis Fitzgerald, and Wilma Fitzgerald preceded him in death in 2010.
Stanton was actively involved in numerous church activities and boards throughout his lifetime. He also served on various community boards including the Chocolay Township Board of Review, Marquette County Waste Management Board, The Canadian Lakes Property Corporation Board of Directors and several professional organizations pertaining to his expertise. Likewise, he was an active member of the Marquette Kennel Club and was instrumental in establishing the clubs now famous three-day Labor Day Dog Show.
Upon retirement, Stan and his wife Shirley moved to Canadian Lakes, MI in 1997. Here he became a devoted golfer and an avid photographer. Please contribute in memory of Stanton to The American Cancer Society.Per Stanton’s wishes, cremation will take place with no services being held at this time.
