Marlene L. Schaper's Obituary
Marlene Schaper, 80, of Big Rapids, passed away on March15, 2025. She was born on June 9, 1944, to H.M. (Jim) and Esther (Keso) Lobdell.
A longtime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Marlene was deeply involved in her faith community, participating in the church’s quilter’s group and service guild. She worked briefly after college before dedicating her life to being a homemaker, mother, and caregiver, not only to her own children but also to the children of close friends.
Marlene had a love for sewing and was passionate about dogs, including her beloved grand-dogs. Her home was always a warm and welcoming place for both family and four-legged companions. She enjoyed time with family and friends, playing Euchre and other card games, reading her prayer book, and spending summers at the family’s cottage on Young’s Lake. In her younger years, she found joy in ballroom dancing and adventures with her girlfriends.
She grew up in the Reed City and Hersey area, graduating from Reed City High School. On June 1, 1974, she married James Schaper, whom she met on a blind date set up by a cousin and coworker. They had 39 wonderful years of marriage.
Marlene is survived by her children, Karen and Jake Ripke, and Mike and Robyn Schaper; and her grandchildren, Trent and Alexi Schaper. She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther Lobdell Johnson, Sam Johnson, and H.M. Lobdell; her husband, Jim; and her cherished dog, Millie.
A funeral service will be held in Marlene’s honor on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Big Rapids, with burial to follow at Hersey Village Cemetery. Marlene’s family will greet friends beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or Hospice of Michigan. Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
