Mathias F. Brejcha's Obituary
Big Rapids -Mathias F. Brejcha, 85, of Big Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 3, 2014. Matt was born on February 12, 1929 in Chicago, the son of Mathias and Anna (Prochaska) Brejcha. He graduated from Morton High School in 1947 and subsequently went to college at Stout State University, Menominee, Wisconsin. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force (1951-1955) where he served as an Automotive Specialist both at K-10 (Chinhea Air Base, Korea) and as an instructor at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming. After serving his nation, Matt pursued a career with his second love- automotive maintenance. After completing his Master's program, again at Stout State University in 1957, he moved to Big Rapids an joined Ferris Institute at the onset of the Ferris "Boom-town" era. Soon after his arrival to Big Rapids, he met, dated and married his first love, Patricia Shannessey on September 28, 1958. Five kids and 55 years later, Matt and Pat's love endured; God's perfect love demonstrated here on earth. Matt accomplished much during his lifetime. Early in life, Matt earned the distinguished Eagle Scout badge and eventually became a Boy Scout leader himself. While at Ferris, he authored several automotive text books and was awarded full professorship. As community leader, Matt loved this city and especially supported youth sports.. He coached Little League for 16 years and he was instrumental in building several ball fields to include Rotary and Industrial Fields. He also loved spending time with his family and upon retirement from Ferris 1987, he and Pat traveled the country and the world visiting his children and friends. He especially liked Ireland, Croatia and U.S. Southwest. Matt was a member of St. Mary's parish and an avid supporter for the Knights of Columbus. His military service transferred to supporting the efforts of the American Legion and he was a lifelong member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. Matt is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Ann; two daughters; Deb (Phil) Tornblom of Frisco, Texas, Mary Ann of Big Rapids, three sons; Bob (Lois) Thompson of Haslett, Texas, Mark (Kim) of Big Rapids, and Mike (Brenda) of Big Rapids; ten grandchildren; Chris (Courtney) Tornblom, Jeff Tornblom, Alison Thompson, Adam (Danielle) Prudich, Austin Prudich, ISAF SSgt Marc (Meagan) Brejcha, Katie Lund-Brejcha, Jackson Lund-Brejcha, Rose Brejcha, Matt Brejcha and seven great-grandchildren. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Big Rapids with Father Michael Burt officiating; luncheon to follow at the parish center. Visitation and Rosary will be Tuesday, April 8th from 4-7:00 p.m.at St. Mary's with the Rosary starting at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the local Manna Pantry, St. Mary's Maintenance Fund or the Newman Center of St. Paul/St. Mary.
