Michael Joseph DePew's Obituary
Michael Joseph DePew of Big Rapids passed away peacefully at Butterworth Hospital on December 18, 2025 at the age of 75.
Mike was born on March 18, 1950 in Big Rapids where he resided his entire life. He graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1969 and worked for many years at Judson hardware. In 1978 he began his career at Ferris State University, where he devoted 30 years of service, retiring in 2008 as an HVAC technician. He loved his job as well as the deep friendships he developed throughout his career. Mike is remembered by colleagues, and those who love him, as a dependable man with a strong work ethic and sharp wit.
Growing up on the farm, Mike enjoyed baling hay, cutting wood, and visiting with neighbors. For over 20 years, he owned harness racehorses, working side by side with his brother Tom who was his trainer and driver. In his retirement, he especially loved supporting his grandchildren by attending sporting events and performances. He rarely missed his weekly coffee with family and friends prior to attending Thursday Mass. One of Mike’s favorite pastimes was driving along on his Gator with a pup, or two, at his side.
With his brothers, Mike attended St. Mary Catholic School and remained a lifelong parishioner. Mike’s devotion to God was fundamental in his life, which brought him comfort, especially in his final days.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sally DePew (Knopf); his daughter Amy (Chris) Teceno; son Michael DePew; grandchildren, Olivia, Nicholas, and Henry; and brother Fr. Daniel DePew. He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Lawrence DePew, and brothers, Ron, Karl, Tom, and sister-in-law Bonnie.
