Myrtle Irene Zeller's Obituary
Myrtle Irene "Mert" Zeller, age 94, of Big Rapids, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Metron Nursing Center of Big Rapids. She was born September 11, 1918, in Rodney, the daughter of Orlie and Frieda (Kreller) Spooner, and graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1937. Mert attended beauty school in Grand Rapids, earning her license in 1938, and worked as a beautician in the area for many years. She was the regular hairdresser for Rogers-Mohnke Funeral Home for more than 40 years. Mert also worked at the Parker-Ryan department store and for Drs. Everett and George Stevens in Big Rapids. In 1959 she began work as the Deputy Clerk for the City of Big Rapids, retiring on May 30, 1980. Mert had been an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church since 1948. On November 3, 1945, she married Louis Zeller, who preceded her in death in 1985. Mert is survived by one niece, Linda (Dick) Myers, several great-nieces and -nephews, and two very special friends, Raymond and Janice Steinke. Funeral services for Myrtle will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 23, 2013, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Big Rapids, with the Rev. Gary Hamp officiating. Mert's family will greet friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. prior to services at the church. Following cremation, burial will be in Pine Plains Cemetery. Memorial contributions in her name may be made for the Manna Pantry in care of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
