Nina M. Schroeder's Obituary
Big Rapids Nina M. Schroeder, 95, of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, February 29, 2008, at her residence. She was born November 8, 1912, in Peoria, IL, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Sieh) Rhoades. On May 23, 1933, she married Arthur Schroeder of Big Rapids, and the couple lived in Jackson until moving to Big Rapids in 1939. Nina was a longtime active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed on April 6, 1941. She served with the Altar Guild, the Caring Card Ministry, the Tabitha Ladies Aid, and many other church functions. Nina also volunteered her time as a Red Cross Gray Lady, and was a member of T.O.P.S. Nina loved sending and receiving cards and letters for all occasions, or just because. She had a special gift and talent for making banana nut bread, spending hours baking it for family and friends. She also loved bird watching and reading about the different species in her bird book. Nina was an inspiration to many by way of her kind spirit and strength. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and was grandmother to many others. She touched so many lives with her love and caring ways, and will be greatly missed. Her husband preceded her in death on August 3, 1987. Surviving are 1 son, Arthur L. of Big Rapids; 2 granddaughters, Paula (Lee) Garver of Big Rapids, Stephanie (Ed) Lartigue of Spring, TX; 5 great-grandchildren, Kaci and Tayler Garver, Elexis, Elecia, and Eddie, Jr. Lartigue; 1 sister, Marion Raab of Big Rapids; 1 brother, Clarence (Evelyn) Rainey of Parma; many nieces and nephews; and a special adopted daughter Vonda. Nina was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Harold and Clarence Rhoades. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at St. Peters Lutheran Church, with Rev. John Bookshaw officiating. Burial will be in the Highland View Cemetery. Memorial contributions for Hospice of Michigan or St. Peters may be left at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, where Ninas family will greet friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and at the church prior to services on Wednesday.
