Orma Maxine Van Houten's Obituary
Orma Maxine Van Houten, age 94, of Edmore passed away at Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital on Monday, September 11, 2017. Orma was born August 4, 1923, the daughter of Clarence Otto and Jessie Irene (Shelly) Ashbaugh. She was raised in Six Lakes and graduated from Six Lakes High school at the age of 15. Orma later attended Comtometry School in Detroit, Michigan. Orma married Samuel "Smitty" Smith Van Houten on May 16, 1943. She was a secretary and worked in several offices including the Hitachi Credit Union. Orma was a long-time member of the Day Bethel Baptist Church. She enjoyed golf, decorating, gardening, flowers, and reading but above all enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Orma is survived by her children; Connie Van Houten of Greenville, Koren (David) Forquer of Edmore, Lorraine Van Houten of Hallandale, Florida. Her grandchildren; Joshua (Jodi) Forquer, Jesse Forquer, Kali Forquer, and six great grandchildren; Elizabeth, Silas, Kaleb, Zachary, Jacob and Tegan. Her brother; Jim (Bonnie) Ashbaugh of Edmore, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Orma was preceded in death by her husband Smith who passed away October 4, 1988, her parents; Clarence and Jessie; an infant son, and siblings Lloyd, Lyle, Dean, Genevieve, Lester, Letha, Betty and Duane.
A visitation for Orma will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 5 to 8 pm at the Brigham Funeral Chapel in Edmore. Funeral services will be on Friday, September 15, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Day Bethel Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held at the Vinewood cemetery in Edmore following the funeral service. Memorial contributions may be made out to the Day Bethel Baptist Church.
