Owen D. Oliver's Obituary
Big Rapids - Owen D. Oliver, 90, of Big Rapids, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Evergreen Terrace.
He was born July 9, 1928, in Big Rapids, the son of Otis and Ellen (Vietzke) Oliver, and lived here his entire life. Owen was well-known as a carpenter and craftsman, and worked on numerous homes and business in the area.
For over 20 years, Owen served on the Big Rapids Township Zoning Board. He was a member of the Third Avenue Methodist Church, and also the Stanwood United Methodist Church. Owen enjoyed hunting and fishing, and in his younger years snowmobiling with the neighbors.
In 1947, he married Velma Sova, who preceded him in death in 1996. In 1999, he married Betty LaPreze, who preceded him in death in 2008.
Owen is survived by two sons, Gordon (Carol) of Big Rapids, and Dean (Midge) of Klamath Falls, OR; one daughter Julie (Wes) Dixon of South Boardman; 4 grandchildren, Jackie, Brad (Hillary), Owen (Christine), and Amanda; 2 great-grandchildren, Seth and Hunter; one step-son Randy (Stacey) LaPreze of Stanwood; one step-daughter Lori Villa of Grand Rapids; 5 step-grandchildren, Clinton (Jennifer), Ali, Landrie, Sydnie, and Rob; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Richard and Lynn Oliver, and his sister Glenda Tossey.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pastor Gary Bondarenko officiating. Burial will be in the Stanwood Cemetery. Owen's family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 11, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., and prior to services on Saturday. Memorial contributions in his name may be made for Evergreen Terrace, or the Parkinson's Foundation, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
