Philip Alan Mapes' Obituary
Philip Mapes, 59, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, stepped peacefully into eternity on November 26, 2024, surrounded by his family. He grew up on the family farm in Lakeview, Michigan, the son of Gerald and Sally Mapes. Phil met his soulmate, Corine Tower, when he was 19. Their 41-year story of love and faith would be tested by their vows of for better or worse, in sickness and in health. He was his wife's biggest encourager and took on every DIY project that she came up with. Phil overcame every obstacle that came into his life including heart disease and a heart transplant. Because of his gratefulness and kindness to his doctors and nurses, they all cared for him and called him their favorite patient. He was a strong and loving dad to his 3 children, Amber (Jared) Andrews, Michael (Kassy) Mapes, and Meggan Mapes. Every conversation with his family ended with an "I love you", and he made sure they knew he was proud of them all. He taught his kids to work hard and to love God. He was the sweetest family man and was always willing to do anything for them. He selflessly lived his life putting himself last, making sure his family had what they needed and that they were set up for success. He would drop everything to help them when they needed it, whether that was working on a house or fixing a broken-down vehicle. He was a great outdoorsman that loved to hunt and fish with his family, creating some of their favorite memories together. He was known as Bumpa to his 9 grandchildren, Alyssa, Katlynn, Jaylin, Ryan, Colten, Ayden, Everly, Liam and Hayes. Bumpa always looked forward to seeing and spending time with his grandchildren. He held an annual survival camp for his grandchildren where he taught them all about fishing, welding, ax throwing, and kayaking. They have many memories together including making no-bake cookies and providing an example of a strong and generous man. Phil's last words were "There is always a God in Heaven". He was a tremendous example for his family and will be missed by those left behind. Along with his wife, 3 children and 9 grandchildren, he leaves behind a sister Mary (Gerald) Russell, and brother Matthew (Michele) Mapes who will keep his memories alive to the next generation.
