Richard J. Hosking's Obituary
Big Rapids - Richard John Hosking, Jack, 89, long-time resident of Iron Mountain and currently of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, August 21st at Metron of Big Rapids. Jack was born on September 10, 1919 in Iron Mountain, the son of Richard H. and Priscilla (Knight) Hosking, and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1937. During World War II, Jack served with the United States Army. Following his discharge, he returned to Iron Mountain, where for many years Jack owned and operated the Hosking Fuel Co. Jack was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Elks Club, UCT, Kiwanis Club and Golden K. For 12 years he served on the Board of Education for the Iron Mountain Public Schools as Trustee and President. He was always an advocate of education and encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue their educations. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Jean, sons: James and Helene of Downers Grove, Illinois, David and Suzanne of Big Rapids; daughter-in-law SueEllen Hosking of Spread Eagle, Wisconsin; grandchildren Jaclyn (Hosking) and Graegar Smith, Meredith, Allison, Kate, Erik, Carlyn, Michael, Patrick, Ryan and Elizabeth Hosking; and great grandchild Elyse Smith. He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Ada, and son Robert (Bob). Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Big Rapids, with Pastor Dean Prentiss officiating. Following cremation, burial will take place in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. Jacks family will greet friends at the church after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Iron Mountain. A memorial service in Iron Mountain will be held at a later date.
