Robert Thomas Horan, Jr.'s Obituary
Big Rapids -Robert. T. Horan, Jr., 82, of Big Rapids, went to be with His Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born October 4, 1935, in Grand Rapids, the son of Robert and Agnes (Tighe) Horan, and lived in Big Rapids his entire life. Bob was a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church, graduating from St. Mary Catholic School in 1949, and Big Rapids High School in 1953. On July 9, 1955, he married Dolores Grace Conley. For over 40 years, Bob was involved in the family owned Ford Lincoln Mercury business, Triangle Auto Sales. He served in every capacity, including salesman, manager, and owner, retiring in 1999. Always active in the community, Bob was involved in many various organizations. At the age of 32, he was elected as the youngest Mayor in the history of Big Rapids and the state of Michigan, and participated in many political campaigns. He was a former St. Mary Scoutmaster of Troop #117, president of the Big Rapids Jaycees, Drive Chairman for the United Way, Mecosta County Chamber of Commerce President, and Optimist Club board member. Bob was currently a member of the Board of Directors at Eagle Village. He also was co-founder and chair for the Friends of Ferris PAC. Bob and Dolores were co-chairmen of the St. Mary Parish Center Building Program beginning in 1991, actively raising monies for the construction and maintenance. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, and was formerly a District Deputy. Bob will be dearly missed by his wife Dolores; five children, Robert (Lynn) Horan III, Thomas Horan, Marcia Schuberg, Paul Horan, and Maria (Bill) Stewart; grandchildren, Robert Horan IV, Daniel Horan; Jenilee (Rob) Olson, Thomas (Melanie) Horan; Tyler (Marcie) Schuberg, Kyle (Larenda) Schuberg, Crystal (Miguel) Carvalho, Dylan Schuberg; Jordan Horan; Grace, Jackson, Georgia, and Bayes Stewart; great-grandchildren; Hadley, Layla, Scarlett, Landon, Grayson, Jaelynn, Vashtyn, Evan, Terra, and Aiden; two sisters, Patricia Horan and Carol Tasker; two brothers-in-law, David (Josephine) Conley, Roger (Pam) Conley; one sister-in-law Joyce Conley; and many other family members. Bob was preceded in death by a grandson Joshua Horan, a daughter-in-law Heidi Horan, sisters Mary Horan and Barbara Dawson, brothers-in-law Donald Tasker, Harry D. Conley, and Dr. Walter K. Conley, DVM, nephew John Tasker, and niece Lori Conley. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Father Michael Burt officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Bob's family will greet friends at the church on Monday, December 4, from 4-7 p.m., and after 10 a.m. on Tuesday until time of services.A Memorial contributions in Bob's name may be made for St. Mary Horan Family Foundation Fund, for St. Mary School, or Eagle Village of Hersey.
