Robert Eugene Novak's Obituary
Robert Eugene Novak, 94, of Big Rapids, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at The Brook of Big Rapids, surrounded by the love and memories of those who knew him best.
Born on October 10, 1930, in St. Louis, Missouri, Bob was the cherished son of Thomas J. Novak and Myrtle A. Worth. From a young age, he showcased a remarkable talent as an accomplished singer, gracing the stage with the St. Louis Light Opera Guild during his formative years. At the age of 21, his life took a patriotic turn when he was drafted into the United States Army. Stationed in England, he served with the Special Category of the Army with the Air Force (SCAWAF), where he contributed to the critical task of building runways for the newly introduced B-52 bombers.
After his honorable military service, Bob pursued a distinguished academic path. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Washington University, a master’s degree in liberal arts from Southern Methodist University, and a Doctorate in Education, Administration, and Supervision from the University of Michigan. His intellectual achievements were complemented by his attainment of the prestigious 32nd Degree of Freemasonry, a testament to his dedication and character.
In 1975, Bob’s life took a joyful turn when he married Darlene Eaton, a beloved Big Rapids native. Together, they settled in Big Rapids, where Bob left an enduring mark on the community. He played a key role in developing the Eaton Manor subdivision, a legacy reflected in the naming of Novak Lane in his honor. Professionally, he served as a human resource administrator at Hanchett Mfg. and Michigan Knife, taught business administration at Ferris State University, and contributed to local governance as a member of the Big Rapids City Council. Yet, to those who knew him, Bob was far more than his accomplishments—he was a beloved storyteller and humorist, renowned for his impromptu speeches and witty jokes that brightened any room.
Bob’s wisdom and reflections are beautifully captured in his book, Musings of an Old Man, a heartfelt collection of life lessons that will continue to inspire readers for generations. His legacy lives on through his surviving family: stepchildren Mark Liebetreu (Dana Barfield), David Liebetreu (Julie), and Susan Lewis (Lynn); grandchildren Appollonia, Anthony, and Alessandra Impellizzeri, and Zachary, Ethan, Alexander, and Abigail Liebetreu; and great-grandchildren Von Rae, Veda, and Samuel.
A celebration of Bob’s extraordinary life will be announced in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Big Rapids Historical Society or a charity of your choice in his memory. Bob’s laughter, love, and legacy will forever echo in the hearts of those he touched.
Care and arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Janowicz Funeral Home in Big Rapids.
