Roy L. Dennis' Obituary
Newaygo - Roy L. Dennis, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2017 at home, joining his wife of 65 years, Shirley (Romine) Dennis, who preceded him in death on October 28, 2014. Roy was born on June 26, 1927 in Big Rapids, the son of Allen and Mary (Silloway) Dennis. He graduated from Big Rapids High School in June of 1945, enlisting in the Army in November of 1945. He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany until his honorable discharge in April of 1947. At a Halloween party in 1947, he met the love of his life, Shirley Romine. They were married on June 4, 1949 and made their home on a farm in Goodwell Township, where they raised their four children. He worked for Michigan Wisconsin Pipeline Company for many years before taking a job with Ferris State University as a custodial foreman until his retirement. He also served as President of the Pine View School Board and Goodwell Township Supervisor in his younger years. Throughout his life, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching wildlife, gardening, and being outdoors. He is survived by his children, Mike (Lori) Dennis of Fremont, MI, Tom (Ellen) Dennis of Okemah, OK, Larry (Joan) Dennis of Aiken, SC, and Patti (Shawn) Downey of Canadian Lakes, MI; seven grandchildren, Dan Dennis, Kristen Buff, Dustin Dennis, Andy Dennis, Chris Dennis, Alex Dennis, Casey Downey; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Helen Dennis and Barbara Waldron both of Big Rapids, MI, as well as Sandra Romine of Paris, MI; plus, a special friend of the family, Gwen Dennis. Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Donald, and Gerald, as well as an infant sister, Vera. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, with Pete Alley officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4-7:00 p.m. Interment will be at Goodwell Cemetery in Newaygo County. Memorial contributions may be made to Mecosta County Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC).
