Shirley Fay Cannon's Obituary
Lakeview-Shirley Fay Cannon, age 94, of Lakeview passed away Friday, September 25, 2020 at Spectrum Health Kelsey Rebab Center in Lakeview. She was born on August 8, 1926, the daughter of William H. and Ruth (Stevens) Monroe. She was raised in the Vestaburg area, where she graduated from Vestaburg Public Schools. At the age of 16, Shirley assumed the responsibility of raising her younger brothers and sisters, after the tragic death of her mother. On December 9, 1944, in Stanton, Michigan, she married George Walter Cannon, the love of her life for more than 76 years. Together they owned and operated their family farm and milk routes. Shirley was a member of the local Farm Bureau and was employed at Ora Ida Foods, Gibson Refrigeration, and the Country Kitchen Restaurant in Langston throughout the years, until her retirement in 1987. She enjoyed gardening, reading, crocheting, fishing, and hunting. Shirley especially loved being a foster grandparent at Lakeview Elementary Schools and spending time with her family. She was known for her kind and caring heart and often opened her home to those in need.
Shirley is Survived by two daughters, Diane Covey, and Rosa (Bob) Waite, both of Lakeview; son, Dan (Angie) Cannon of Rockford; 5 grandchildren, Sarah (Nick) Cannon, Kyle Cannon (Eduardo Aceves), Cameron (Emily) Cannon, Lindy Waite, Jacoby (Madelyn) Waite; 5 great-grandchildren, Calvin and Emmett Cannon, Kaelyn Waite, Averi Bailey, Graycin Waite; one brother, Clifford Monroe; one sister, Geraldine "Gerry" (Bob) Leslie; sister-in-law, Althea Hillis; brother-in-law, Senyor Cannon; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Cannon; son-in-law, Henry "Hank" Covey; sisters, Kathryn Spencer, Doris Dalrymple, Lillian Cady, Opal Reed, Coralyn VanWormer; brothers, Addison, Elson and Clell Monroe.
A funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Brigham Funeral Chapel in Lakeview, with Pastor Dave Hansen officiating. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Entrican. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 from 5:00-8:00 PM at the funeral chapel.
