Shirley L. Pierce Walker's Obituary
Shirley L. Pierce Walker was called to her heavenly home on May 23, 2023.
Shirley was born in Chelsea, MI on January 8, 1935. She was the daughter of Paul Dancer Pierce and Ivy Margaret Kinsey Pierce.
Shirley graduated from Chelsea High School in 1952 and Eastern Michigan University in 1957. She also received a master’s degree from Northern Michigan University in 1972. She married Lyman Stanton (Stan) Walker in Chelsea in 1957.
She is survived by her children, Marcia Lyn Defnet (Donald) of Marionette, WI, and Cheryl Jane Schreiner (Harold) of Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren, Garrett D. and Adam J. Williams, Stuart M and Amanda R. Spink, Dylan Walker, and Summer Evans Schreiner; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Williams, Caiden Williams, Sadie and Noah Neal, Pierce and Paige Spink.
Shirley was a devoted teacher and educator. In 1994, she received the Highest Order of Excellence Influential Educators Award from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. After teaching some thirty years, she retired in 1997 but continued to tutor students. She was a member of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, National Council of English Teachers, Canadian Lakes Pet Food Drive, Novel Friends, and Writers Club.
She was an avid reader and writer as well as an animal advocate. She will be missed by all and lovingly remembered.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on July 9, 2023 from 1 – 4 PM in Canadian Lakes, MI.
