Thomas E. Tashey's Obituary
Stanwood Thomas E. Tashey, 95, of Canadian Lakes, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2008, at his residence. He was born November 14, 1912, in Elgin, IL, the son of Ernest and Margaret (Campbell) Tashey, and grew up on the east side of Detroit. A watchmaker by trade, Tom owned and operated M. Tashey & Sons in Detroit for many years, specializing in watch & jewelery repair. In 1975, Tom moved from Franklin to Canadian Lakes, where he had lived since. He was a member of the United Church of Big Rapids, and was very active in the Canadian Lakes community. He was a former member of the Lions Club in Detroit, the Masonic Lodge, and the Elks Lodge. In 1933, he married Doris Hodgson, who preceded him in death in 1992. His companion in later years was Carolyn Bielby, who preceded him in 2006. An avid reader and golfer, Tom was truly a people person, and led a full and happy life. Survivors include 1 daughter, Margaret (Jim) Morrison of Troy; 1 son, Thomas II (Myriam) of Chicago, IL; 6 grandchildren, Debbie (Tim) Schmatz, Todd (Kim) Peterson, Ross Peterson, Tom Tashey, III, Lucas Tashey, and Ali Tashey; and 5 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother Bud and a sister Dorothy. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 5, 2008, at the United Church in Big Rapids, with Rev. Jon Fleming officiating. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery in Franklin. Toms family will greet friends at the church after 10 a.m. on Thursday. Memorial contributions in his name for the United Church may be left at the church or in care of the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids, where arrangements were entrusted.
