Alger Owen Abbey's Obituary
Alger Owen Abbey, age 95, of Lakeview, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Lakeview Terrace. Alger was born on July 25, 1921 in Lakeview, the son of Clifford and Arleu (Peavey) Abbey. He was raised in Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview High School. Alger faithfully served his country in the Air Force as a Master Sgt. From August 26, 1940 until September 30, 1945. He married Edna Klifford on May 26, 1948 in Greenville, MI. Alger was a construction supervisor for Gust Construction for 25 years until his retirement in 1986. Alger enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and limited TV (news, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy). He was a member of the Lakeview Free Methodist Church, Boy Scout Council, and Lakeview School Board. Alger was a missionary to various places with his wife Edna, including Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), Africa, Mexico, and Haiti.
Alger will be missed by one son Jim (Sylvia) Knight; grandchildren Jim (Katrina) Knight, Kevin (Miranda) Knight, and Jackie Knight; great-grandchildren Jaret, Kasey, Bayleigh, and Lainey Knight; one sister Gwendolyn (David) Bale; one brother-in-law Darwin Johnson; many nieces, and nephews; special friends Dr. Lionel and Mrs. Sharon Hurd, Pam Main, and Patty and Ron Hawley.
Alger was preceded in death by his wife Edna Abbey; parents Clifford and Arleu Abbey; four siblings Eris Smith, Hugh "Bud" Smith, Vicky Johnson, and Eldon "Bud" Abbey; and two sisters-in-law Ruth and Mary Abbey.
Funeral services for Alger will be Sunday, August 20, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Lakeview Free Methodist Church with Rev. David Waid officiating. A light luncheon will immediately follow the funeral at the church. Those wishing to contribute in Alger's memory are asked to consider the Gideon's Bible Guild. A memorial service for Alger will also take place later on.
