Charles Summers Barrix's Obituary
age 89, of Novi (formerly of Six Lakes and Dimondale, Michigan), went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 28, 2015 at Providence Park Hospital in Novi, Michigan. Charles was born in Sharon, Tennessee on July 14, 1926, the son of George E. and Edwina Bell (Summers) Barrix. He was raised in Gleason, Tennessee and attended Gleason Public Schools, entering the military in his senior year. He was in the Army for nearly 3 years serving in Korea, Germany, and Austria. A part of the Occupation Forces, he was the Assistant Manager of an NCO Club for 18 months. Charles married Nyda E. Kelley on April 1, 1949, in Lansing, Michigan. Charles was the owner of Capital Cleaning Company in Lansing for 15 years. He served two terms as Mayor of Dimondale and the Deputy District Governor of Michigan Lions Club and President of the Michigan Unit Airstream Clubs. Charles was a Michigan Education Association Building Engineer for MEA for over 20 years in Lansing, Michigan. He was a life member of the VFW Post 5602 in Six Lakes. Charles and Nyda made a month long tour of Europe in 1974. While in Bamburg, Germany, they found the couple that he worked with during the war. He enjoyed traveling, carving, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends.
Charles will be missed by his wife of 66 years, Nyda E. Barrix of Novi; children Stephen K. (LaVergne) Barrix of Homer-Glen, IL, Marsha E. Barrix of Traverse City, and Sue E. (Kirk) Hooper of Northville; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one brother Halbert R. (Elizabeth) Barrix of TX; one sister Brenda Adams of West Liberty, KY; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents George and Edwina Barrix; four brothers George E. Barrix Jr., Phillip G. Barrix, Samuel D. Barrix, and Hugh E. Barrix.
Funeral Services for Charles will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Brigham Funeral Chapel in Six Lakes, Michigan with Pastor Sue Baab officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. A luncheon will be at New Life United Methodist Church following graveside services at Hillcrest Cemetery in Six Lakes, Michigan. Memorial Contributions in Charles memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
